Byrnes Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
NEW YORK – Marquette University men’s lacrosse graduate defenseman Liam Byrnes was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Ryan McNamara was listed on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their play in an overtime loss at No. 1 Notre Dame and a win over Providence last week.
Byrnes, the BIG EAST Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, picked up eight ground balls, caused a pair of turnovers and chipped in offensively with an assist at Notre Dame as he led MU’s top-ranked defense in action. On Senior Day against Providence, the graduate student picked up three ground balls and caused four turnovers to continue his All-America-caliber play at close defense and on the wing.
McNamara became the third Marquette player to ever reach 30 goals and 40 points in a season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of goals and three assists in a league win over Providence. He also posted a goal and assist at then-No. 2/1 Notre Dame on Wednesday as MU suffered a tough 8-7 overtime loss to the Fighting Irish.
It is the sixth weekly honor of the year for McNamara and the second for Byrnes.
Despite falling to Notre Dame last week, the Golden Eagles (9-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) moved up in both polls on Monday, jumping from 19th to 15th in the coaches’ poll and from 17 to 15 in the media poll. Marquette also moved up six spots in the RPI rankings to 10th following a 1-1 week.
The Golden Eagles return to action at No. 13/16 Duke on Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. Central time on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN application.
