BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK -- Marquette University men's lacrosse players Liam Byrnes, B.J. Grill and Kyle Whitlow were named All-BIG EAST Conference First Team selections, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon, while Jordan Greenfield and Conor Gately were each named to the second team.

Byrnes was the unanimous choice at long stick midfielder and was a preseason All-BIG EAST selection. The West Islip, New York, native is Marquette's all-time leader in ground balls and has recorded 50 in 2015 along with a team-best 24 caused turnovers. He has also notched four goals and a pair of assists this season and ranks among the NCAA's active leaders in career points from a long pole player.

A second team all-conference performer in 2014, Byrnes earned weekly league honors twice this season and appeared in all 15 games with one start as a close defender in MU's victory over Ohio State on March 1.

Grill earns a repeat spot on the first team after shutting down some of the nation's top attackman once again in 2015. The Bridgewater, New Jersey, native notched 20 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers while being isolated most games with the top defensive assignment. His work against No. 1 Notre Dame's Matt Kavanagh on April 7 limited the All-American attackman to zero goals for the only time this season.

Whitlow was also an All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection along with Byrnes and Grill and was a second team postseason honoree last year. The offensive midfielder finished the regular season tied for second on MU with 23 goals, highlighted by a four-goal performance in MU's 11-10 comeback win at then-No. 17/19 Hofstra on Feb. 14.

The Canadian also took sole possession of first place in Marquette history when he scored his 60th career goal against Providence on April 11 and now has 64 after potting a hat trick against Denver on April 25.

Greenfield recorded a Marquette single-season record 52 points this season and notched seven hat tricks in his lone year with the program. The graduate student scored a program-record six goals in Marquette's 11-10 overtime victory at Richmond on Feb. 22 and became the first MU player to be honored as a national player of the week for his performance against the Spiders.

Gately earns the first all-conference accolade of his career after posting 23 goals and 14 assists in 2015, marks that rank second on the squad behind Greenfield. The Yorktown Heights, New York, native holds Marquette's career record for points with 104 on the strength of 56 career goals and 48 assists.

The Golden Eagles enter the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Tournament with a 10-5 regular season mark, which included a 7-0 start that saw Marquette reach a peak ranking of No. 9 in the media poll. MU will face Georgetown in the BIG EAST Conference semifinal on Thursday, April 30, at Villanova Stadium in a 3:30 p.m. contest that will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
