Byrnes begins MLL Career Saturday with Florida Launch
May 18, 2016
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University graduate student Liam Byrnes will be the first former Golden Eagle to suit up for a Major League Lacrosse game on Saturday, May 21 when he joins his Florida Launch teammates against the Atlanta Blaze.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. Central time at Florida Atlantic University Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida.
Byrnes concluded his final season in Blue & Gold as the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year and led the Golden Eagles to their first NCAA Championship appearance in just their fourth season of competition.
The Golden Eagles won their first BIG EAST tournament championship during Byrnes’ final season, and the defenseman was honored as the championship’s most outstanding player. Byrnes, who saw time at close defense and as a long-stick midfielder during MU’s 61-game history, ended his career as the program’s all-time leader in ground balls (218) and caused turnovers (102).
The West Islip, New York native was the Launch’s third selection (21st overall) in the 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft and joins a roster that includes 2014 MLL Rookie of the Year and former BIG EAST Conference-foe Kieran McArdle (St. John’s) as well as Lyle and Miles Thompson and MLL all-time point leader Casey Powell. Byrnes addition is expected to bolster a defense that is without MLL veteran Ken Clausen, who sustained a season-ending injury.
