Four Men's Lacrosse Alums Fighting for MLL Championship

MILWLAUKEE - Four former Marquette University men's lacrosse players, B.J. Grill, Conor Gately, Ryan McNamara and Liam Byrnes, will play in the Major League Lacrosse semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Grill and the defending MLL Champions, the Denver Outlaws (9-5), will host Gately, McNamara and the Rochester Rattlers (8-6) at Peter Barton Stadium at the University of Denver on Saturday, Aug. 12 with the first faceoff at 3:30 p.m. Central time.   The Outlaws are currently tied for first place with the Ohio Machine, and are one game away from defending their 2016 MLL crown.

Grill owns 26 groundballs, tying his amount picked up in the 2016 campaign, and five caused turnovers in the 2017 season. Grill is also one of four players with MU ties that was selected for the U.S. Lacrosse training team.

Gately, McNamara and the Rattlers hope to stop the Outlaws in their tracks and dethrone the current champions on Saturday.  Gately has seen action in six games, while posting 10 goals and four assists. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y. native has also picked up six groundballs and caused seven turnovers. McNamara has seen time in seven games for the Rattlers since being drafted in May. McNamara, who received his second All-America nod in 2017, has netted 11 goals and four assists.

The Florida Launch (8-6) will travel to Obetz, Ohio to take on the Ohio Machine (9-5).  Brynes has played in five games for the Launch after finishing a NLL championship season with the Georgia Swarm. The long stick midfielder is responsible for a goal, 12 groundballs and three caused turnovers. Brynes joins Grill as those who have been selected for the U.S. Lacrosse training team.


 

 

The Launch and the Machine will compete for a spot in the championship on Saturday, Aug 12 at 6:30 p.m. Central time.
