Men’s Lacrosse Unveils 2016 Schedule
Oct. 13, 2015
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Joe Amplo has announced the 2016 schedule for the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team, which will kick off regular season action on Saturday, Feb. 20 in Milwaukee against Bellarmine in addition to a loaded BIG EAST Conference slate.
“We have to play the toughest out of conference schedule possible so that we can prepare ourselves for BIG EAST play,” Amplo said. “The BIG EAST is turning out to be one of the absolute best conferences in the country. With the growth and development of each team, we could realistically have four programs in the top 20, if not five. It’s going to be a bear to get through that conference, just the round robin phase and qualify for the tournament. Each week is going to present different challenges and it’s going to be exciting.”
The Golden Eagles, who won a program-best 10 games during the 2015 campaign, will host a total of five home contests beginning with that early season matchup against the Knights at Valley Fields.
Marquette will make another February trip to Richmond on Saturday, Feb. 27 following last season’s thrilling 11-10 overtime victory in which MU recovered from a late four-goal deficit on Jordan Greenfield's sixth goal of the game in overtime.
The Midwest Lacrosse Classic will be held this season in Columbus, Ohio, where MU will take on Detroit on Friday, March 4 before facing tournament-host Ohio State on Sunday, March 6. Marquette defeated both squads last season in Louisville, capped by a 10-9 win over an NCAA tournament-bound Buckeyes squad in the closing seconds.
The Golden Eagles will host Robert Morris on Saturday, March 12 at the start of the Marquette’s spring break before heading to Hamden, Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 19. This year will mark the first meeting against both RMU and QU.
BIG EAST action begins the following week in Milwaukee when Marquette hosts Georgetown on Saturday, March 26 looking to avenge last season’s two defeats, including a 12-8 loss to the Hoyas in the conference tournament semifinals. The Golden Eagles will also welcome Villanova to Wisconsin on Saturday, April 2 before heading to St. John’s to take on the Red Storm in New York.
Marquette will again travel to Notre Dame (Tuesday, April 12) and Duke (Saturday, April 23) in the month of April, separated by a Saturday, April 16 matchup with Providence that will serve as the official send off for MU’s 19-player group of departing seniors.
The Golden Eagles will head to Denver for the regular season finale against the defending NCAA Champion Denver Pioneers on Saturday, April 30 at Peter Barton Stadium, which will also serve as the site of the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament.
