Men's Track and Field Team in Fifth Place at Conference USA Championships

May 8, 2001

Milwaukee -- The Marquette men's and women's track teams head to Tampa, Fla., this weekend (May 10-12) to take part in the Conference USA Championship. The action starts on Thursday with the decathlon and heptathlon competitions as well as the men's women's hammer throw event. In addition, the men's and women's 10,000 meters in both the men's and women's division will be held on Thursday.

The meet then swings into full action on Friday and Saturday with the majority of the finals in the running events being held on Saturday.

Heading into the weekend, Houston stands as the men's and women's defending team champion. The Cougars' men's team has claimed the title the past four years while the women's program has brought home the crown in two of the past three championships.

Both Marquette's men's and women's teams head into this weekend's action on a strong note with each squad turning in a solid effort last weekend at the Central Collegiates in Kalamazoo.

The women's team claimed four first-place finishes in the eight events that the team had competitors highlighted by freshman Brianna Dahm's (Two Rivers, Wis.) first-place effort in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Dahm's time of 10:36.77 represented a personal best and also was a NCAA Provisional mark. Other first-place finishers included junior Jennifer Batie (Lynwood, Ill.) in the 400 meters (56.62), junior Julie Sorrentino (Machesney Park, Ill.) in the hammer throw (173'05.00) and the 4x400 meter relay team of senior Sher-ree Beekman (Milwaukee), freshman Julianna Wesolowski (Franklin, Wis.), Jennifer Batie and junior Jeannette Batie (Lynwood, Ill.) with a mark of 3:48.43.

The men's squad picked up three first-place positions out of nine competitions entered, including freshman Ryan Jacobson's (Sister Bay, Wis.) top spot in the 800 meters -- a personal best mark of 1:53.04. Senior Joe Herington (Westerville, Ohio) continued his fine outdoor season with a first-place effort in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 14:33.79 which also ranks him third on the school's all-time chart in that event. Senior Greg Uher (Wilber, Neb.) rounded out the men's winners with a throw of 176'07.00 in the discus.
