Redshirt sophomore C. Nortey enjoyed a breakout rookie season, but had to miss all of 2012 - his time away re-focused him and gave him new perspective on his soccer career moving forward.

2013: Ranked No. 11 on the Midseason National Top 100 list ... MU's active career leader in goals (17), including game-winning goals (7), and career points (38) ... Leads team in points (18) and goals (8) entering this weekend, in addition to a pair of assists ... Scored the game-winning goal in the first four BIG EAST matches this season, and also notched the game-winner in the 80th minute with a beautiful side-volley in a 2-1 win vs. Seton Hall (11/2) ... Named national player of the week by, College Soccer News and College Sports Madness, and also collected BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, after scoring game-winners against Butler and Creighton ... Scored game-winner in the first half of a 1-0 win over No. 7 Creighton (10/12) ... Tallied golden goal in a 3-2 double-overtime victory over nationally ranked Butler (10/9) ... Named to Top Drawer Soccer Men's College Team of the Week (Oct. 24) and College Soccer News Team of the Week (Sept. 26) ... Earned MU's Golden Boot Award and MU's Newcomer of the Year award ... One of three MU players and the only freshman to see action in all 19 games ... Made 15 starts, mostly at forward ... Transitioned from the MU midfield to striker seven games into the season, making his first start up top for the Golden Eagles against Michigan (Sept. 18), scoring one and assisting on MU's other goal in the 2-1 win over the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich. ... Led the team in goals (9) and points (20) and finished fourth in the BIG EAST in both categories ... Nine goals in a season is the most by an MU player since 2004 (Chris Lee, 10) and the most by an MU freshman in nearly 20 years (Allen Stoltman scored a team rookie record 10 goals in 1993) ... Scored his first collegiate goal in a 3-2 win over Western Michigan (Sept. 2) ... His second career goal came on a bicycle kick vs. Wright State (Sept. 11) ... Prior to Marquette: James "C." Nortey arrived at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., from Ghana as part of the Right to Dream Academy, a charity that offers underprivileged children in Africa the opportunity to "reach their true potential" through sport and education ... Was a three-time all-state and all-region selection while at Hotchkiss and led the school in goals scored as a freshman, sophomore and senior ... Hotchkiss went undefeated in 2007 and 2010 with Nortey serving as team captain during the 2010 campaign under head coach Chris Downs ... Recipient of The Theodore Newlin Prize given to the Hotchkiss student who has made the most positive contribution to the school ... Led club team to the U-18 state championship and a third-place finish at the U-19 regional ... Also participated in track and field and dance in high school.
