2007: Sweeney sat out the 2007 season as a redshirt at Illinois-Chicago, before transferring to Marquette at the end of the fall semester and retained four years of eligibility.

Prior to Marquette: A two-year letterwinner at Marquette University High School, Sweeney was a first team all-state, first team all-area, all-region and All-Greater Metro Conference selection following his senior season in 2006. He helped lead the Hilltoppers to the quarterfinals of the state championship as a senior after guiding MUHS to a state title in 2005. He also lettered two years in basketball, earning Offensive MVP honors in 2004. He played eight years of club soccer for the Tosa Warriors, under the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club, coached by his father John Sweeney. Sweeney helped the Kickers win the 2006 Wisconsin Premier League championship in 2006 and 2007.
