MU Set To Face USF Thursday in First Round of BIG EAST Tourney

Nationally Ranked UConn Tops Marquette 3-0 In Final Match of Regular Season

Oct. 12, 2005

MILWAUKEE - Freshman forward Jamie Zarse came off the bench and scored shortly after his entry, leading Marquette (5-6-1) to a 1-0 win over Wis.-Green Bay.

Zarse netted his strike in the 33rd minute placing a shot to the near post from six yards out. He was the benefactor of a brilliant cross from junior forward Ryan Nikchevich after a throw from sophomore Mike Carlson.

"It was a lovely goal, just textbook," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It doesn't have to be hard at that point, just put in the right spot."

Marquette held that lead for the remainder of the contest. The Golden Eagles played well on defense and had offensive chances later in the contest. Zarse had a shot at a second goal as he one-timed a ball just wide in the second half after a smart entry from junior Bryan Dahlquist.

"Psychologically, it was very important for us to win tonight," Adlard said. "We shouldn't have lost (to Pittsburgh) on Saturday. Fate wasn't on our side tonight and we didn't want that to happen twice.

Adlard credited Wis.-Green Bay (6-5) in giving Marquette a challenge for much of the night.

"The fact that Green Bay is much improved is a double bonus for us," Adlard said of the win. "I think (UWGB) has some assets with their speed and their game plan was very good. They are making giant strides."

Marquette hits the road for its next contest, taking on Providence at noon EDT.
