Marquette Soccer Secures Late-Night Victory Over Parkside
April 19, 2018
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team held its own version of “Midnight Madness” late Wednesday evening, defeating visiting UW-Parkside, 2-1, inside the Valley Dome.
In a make-up from Sunday’s originally scheduled match that was postponed due to hazardous travel with a rare April snowstorm, the teams decided to rescheduled in a 10 p.m. Central time start to accommodate for student-athletes class schedules and facility availability.
Patrick Seagrist and Grant Owens accounted for scores as Marquette built a 2-0 lead in the second half. A sturdy backline held the Rangers off the scoresheet until the 80th minute when UWP broke through. The Golden Eagle defense held strong for the final 10 minutes and secured the victory.
The game opened with several chances being created by the MU attack and a healthy majority of possession. Eventually, Connor Alba played a short diagonal pass into the box to find Seagrist, who gave MU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half started as the first half ended with a stingy UW-Parkside defense denying the Golden Eagles successful scoring chances. However, Owens was able to sneak one passed the Ranger keeper and give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
Diego Nuñez nearly gave head coach Louis Bennett’s squad an insurmountable 3-0 lead after having one goal called back and putting another delivery off the bar.
The steady play of Luis Barraza in net was finally breached with about 10 minutes remaining as UWP connected on a rocket from the top of the box. The Rangers gained momentum down the stretch, but the Marquette backline held firm.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, April 22, hosting Cardinal Stritch (10:30 a.m.) and Northern Michigan (12 p.m.) inside the Valley Dome. Fans are encouraged to attend and admission is free to both contests.
