Aug. 12, 2012
MILWAUKEE - In a preseason battle featuring two defending conference champions, it was Marquette University prevailing 2-1 over Loyola University Chicago in a men's soccer exhibition match Sunday night at Valley Fields.
Redshirt freshman Axel Sjoberg headed in the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles in the 87th minute on a free-kick serve by junior Paul Dillon. Dillon's cross came from the right side of the field, about 25 yards out and found Sjoberg in front of the six-yard box.
Despite Marquette's 2-1 advantage at the end of regulation, the two teams had mutually agreed before the contest to close out play two 10-minute extra periods. Each team managed just one shot in extra time, while MU freshman Brady Walsh made one save in 20 minutes of action after replacing starting goalkeeper Charlie Lyon.
Marquette, which was playing in its first preseason match against another NCAA Division I opponent since last year's BIG EAST Blue Division championship run, opened the scoring early in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on an own goal. MU sophomore Sebastian Jansson crossed a ball from near the endline on the left side of the box that was inadvertently directed into the Ramblers net.
Loyola, the defending champions from the Horizon League and a 2011 NCAA postseason participant, was able to equalize in the 21st minute on a blast by Brian Bement into the upper right corner, far post, from 15 yards out and MU
MU was unable to capitalize on a commanding number of corner kicks, owning a 13-2 advantage over the Ramblers.
