MU Falls to Wright State, 2-1, in Preseason Opener
Aug. 13, 2016
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team opened its preseason slate on Saturday night at Valley Fields with a 2-1 setback to Wright State University. Redshirt junior Daniel Szczepanek's third-minute strike wasn't enough as the Raiders responded with two unanswered goals.
Officially less than a week into the preseason, the Marquette coaching staff made a point to get everyone into the match who was able to go. Even though offensive systems have yet to be introduced, the offense shone bright out of the gates.
In the third minute, Szczepanek started a counter attack, feeding a ball to freshman Connor Alba, who delivered a lead pass to the speedy freshman Jan Maertins. The German native raced up the left side line and found Szczepanek at the far post, who made a lengthy run for the first goal of the match.
The lead would hold until the 16th minute when WSU's Dan Bent headed home a rebound off an initial save from sophomore goalkeeper Luis Barraza. Both teams went into halftime knotted up at one goal apiece.
The second half would see its fair share of chances for each side, but Wright State found the go-ahead score in the 89th minute as Stefan Rokvic finished an organized cross from Austin Kinley to give the Raiders the 2-1 victory.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action for their second of three preseason matches when they take on Detroit on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. at Valley Fields.
