Marquette Plays Green Bay to Exhibition Draw
Aug. 13, 2017
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team battled visiting Green Bay to a 1-1 draw in preseason action at Valley Fields on Sunday. Sophomore Connor Alba provided the lone tally for the Golden Eagles, who wrap up the preseason slate Saturday, Aug. 19 at Loyola Chicago.
Marquette looked like the superior side in the first 45 minutes with Alba’s score holding up and the defense allowing only a single shot to the Phoenix heading into halftime.
Newcomer and junior transfer Steffen Böhm made his presence felt shortly after the Alba goal, denying Green Bay’s Michael Carreon of a shot from close range while MU goalkeeper Luis Barraza was caught off his line.
The second half looked like a typical preseason exhibition as both sides were sloppy and fatigue played a factor. Green Bay responded by outshooting MU, 5-4, in the second half, including the equalizing goal by Tomer Zlockzower in the 66th minute. The GB forward finished a header off Buran Huseini’s long cross by sneaking it inside the right post.
The Golden Eagles ended the match with an 8-6 advantage. Both sides combined for nine corners with GB holding the slight edge by one.
Marquette will take on Loyola Chicago on the road next Saturday, completing the preseason portion of the schedule. The Golden Eagles start the regular season on the road at Kentucky on Friday, Aug. 25 before returning home for the regular season home opener against UIC on Friday, Sept. 1.
