Golden Eagles Cruise Past Loyola Chicago 2-0 In Preseason Action
Aug. 17, 2011
CHICAGO -- With a goal and an assist, senior midfielder Amilcar Herrera accounted for both of Marquette University's second-half scores Wednesday in a 2-0 shutout at Loyola University Chicago.
It was the first exhibition match of the 2011 preseason for head coach Louis Bennett and the Golden Eagles, who reported for training back on Aug. 10.
With the scored knotted at 0-0 in the 63rd minute, Calum Mallace took a throw in on the far side of the field and sent a long cross to the back post where Herrera volleyed it past the keeper from the corner of the six-yard box, giving MU the go-ahead tally.
Three and a half minutes later Herrera set up for a free kick on the right side of the field and found 6-foot-7 central defender Axel Sjoberg in the middle of the box. Sjoberg took one touch before literally walking the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
In an effort to quickly get the newcomers acclimated to the college game, Coach Bennett started five redshirt or true freshmen, including the first career start for redshirt freshman goalkeeper Charlie Lyon.
Lyon played the entire first half and made one save, stopping an Enrique Garcia bicycle kick shot attempt, before giving way to junior David Check in the second half.
Each team totaled eight shots apiece, including three shots on goal.
Marquette wraps up the short preseason this Saturday, Aug. 20 when the Golden Eagles travel to UW-Parkside (NCAA Division II) for a 1 p.m. CT exhibition match.
