FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Both teams had chances to put the ball into the back of the net, but nonetheless there were no heroes at Hefner Fields as the Marquette University men's soccer team and Xavier University played to a 0-0 draw Friday afternoon after 90 minutes of preseason action at the National Soccer Festival.

Xavier came out of the gates with an attacking mindset as the Musketeers registered all three of its first-half shots within 10 minutes of the opening kickoff, including one strike that sailed over the crossbar roughly 50 seconds into the match.

Marquette settled in soon thereafter. A corner kick in the 19th minute resulted in a header by freshman John Pothast that was scooped up by the Xavier goalkeeper. Moments later, sophomore Charlie Hoover entered the game and immediately got a look at goal, but his volley was sent wide.

The Musketeers began the second half same as the first, garnering most of their opportunities off early set pieces and eventually controlled much of the possession in the final stanza.

But the Golden Eagles created some quality chances of their own. A mishap led to MU's first big break of the second period when sophomore Sebastian Jansson stole the ball from the Xavier goalkeeper and played a low cross to classmate Kelmend Islami whose touch was smothered by the keeper.

Perhaps the best scoring opportunity during the run of play belonged to the Musketeers. With less than six minutes remaining in regulation, Luke Spencer chipped the ball ahead between two Marquette defenders and found teammate Matt Walker on a run. Walker attempted to slot the ball between MU goalkeeper Charlie Lyon and the left post, but Lyon came up big with his second and final save of the match.

Lyon played all 90 minutes between the posts for his first shutout of the preseason as the Golden Eagles move to 1-0-1 in exhibition matches.

Marquette put three of its seven shots on goal, including a bouncing strike by junior Paul Dillon in the 79th minute. Xavier managed six shots, including two on target.

Friday's contest was MU's lone match in the National Soccer Festival, which wraps up on Sunday. The three-day event featured the likes of fellow BIG EAST schools Notre Dame and Louisville, host IPFW, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Indiana, as well as Mexican professional club Chivas Guadalajara.

The Golden Eagles complete their preseason slate on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Wright State (11 a.m. CT).

Marquette starters: Lyon (GK), Hermsen, Sjoberg, J. Pothast, E. Pothast, Dillon, Robb, Schillinger, Selvaggi, Jansson, Islami (subs: Hoover, Routledge, Lysak, Mau, Behm)
