MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team opened its 2014 preseason schedule Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against the University of Tulsa at Valley Fields.
The teams played three 35-minute periods. All MU players who were available saw action in Sunday's contest.
Marquette grabbed a 1-0 lead toward the end of the opening frame on a goal by David Selvaggi in the 29th minute. Selvaggi picked up a loose ball inside the box and slotted it past the Golden Hurricane goalie after a long throw by Jake Taylor on the near touchline was flicked by 6-foot-7 central defender Axel Sjoberg. Taylor and Sjoberg were each credited with an assist on the play.
All-America candidate Charlie Lyon saved all three of Tulsa's shots on goal in the first period and the Golden Eagles' defensive unit kept the visitors off the scoreboard until the 75th minute when Tulsa striker Aymar Sigue headed it past MU goalie Brady Walsh on a long cross from the right side.
Marquette will continue its preseason exhibition slate this Friday, Aug. 22 when the squad travels to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the annual Shindigz National Soccer Festival where the Golden Eagles are scheduled to face Ohio State.
Kickoff against the Buckeyes is set for 5 p.m. Central time (6 p.m. ET) at the Fort Wayne Sport Club located at 3102 Ardmore Avenue.
