MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's soccer team got second-half goals from freshman Coco Navarro and redshirt sophomore C. Nortey as the Golden Eagles defeated Wright State 2-0 Saturday night in the 2013 preseason opener at Valley Fields.

Four MU goalkeepers - Charlie Lyon, Brady Walsh, Mac Wheeler and Kyle Gress -- combined for the shutout, and all nine freshmen made their debut for the Blue & Gold. Two 10-minute overtime periods were tacked on at the end of regulation for a total of 110 minutes of action.

"I was very pleased with the evening as a whole," said Louis Bennett, who is entering his eighth season as Marquette's head coach. "We were under pressure right off the bat, but we settled in and played very well structurally, I thought. And the goalkeepers each got a taste of keeping the ball out of the back of the net."

Wright State was awarded six corner kicks within the first few minutes of the match, which led to a pair of early saves by Lyon. MU ended up leading the shot column 7-5 in the opening half, but neither team was able to grab the advantage as the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Navarro gave Marquette a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute when he headed the ball past Raiders' goalkeeper Craig Feehan. C. Nortey served it to the back post to Louis Bennett II, who headed it back across the goal to Navarro who tapped it in.

Nortey, who finished with three points, added an insurance goal in the 76th minute after receiving a cross from the left side of the box by teammate Sebastian Jansson.

Both teams ended up with 12 shots apiece, while Wright State had a 13-6 advantage on corner kicks.

"I'm content with the progress we've made in just a short period of time," said Bennett. "The good thing about this program is that it's becoming increasingly more difficult for new guys to come in and make an impact due to the quality and depth that we have a various positions."

MU wraps up its preseason slate on Thursday, Aug. 22, in Fort Wayne, Ind., where the No. 12 Golden Eagles will take on top-ranked, and defending national champion Indiana as part of the Shindigz National Soccer Festival.

Marquette starters: Lyon (GK), Holowaty, Sjoberg, Ciesiulka, Lysak, E. Pothast, Parianos, Hoover, Taylor, Szczepanek, McBride; subs: Dillon, Nortey, Krynski, Jansson, Hermsen, Bennett II, Navarro, Schulz, Alberts, Zyteja, Wheeler, Walsh, Gress
