FORT WAYNE, INDIANA - The No. 12-ranked Marquette University men's soccer team defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 Friday in preseason action at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival.

Due to heavy rain earlier in the day, tonight's pitch at the Fort Wayne Sport Club was muddy and slow. However, the soggy conditions didn't stop All-American candidate C. Nortey from netting two second-half goals to give Marquette a come-from-behind victory. It was the lone preseason contest away from Valley Fields for the Golden Eagles.

After no shots on goal for the first 25 minutes of action, a corner kick by Louis Bennett II was knocked around the top of the six-yard box before a beautiful David Selvaggi bicycle kick put Marquette on the board for a 1-0 lead.

One minute later, Ohio State's Hunter Robertson volleyed in an equalizer off a free kick from 20 yards out to level the score at 1-1. The Buckeyes then grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the 31st minute off a long throw-in that led to a Max Moller volley that deflected off goalkeeper Charlie Lyon at the near post.

Three minutes into the second half, Bennett II curled a free kick from the top of the 18 that resulted in a fantastic save by a stretched hand from the diving Ohio State goalkeeper that would have found the upper 90.

Another would-be equalizer by Nick Parianos was waved off in the 49th minute due to a foul in the box by MU on a corner kick.

At the 70th minute, a Bennett II corner was headed in by Nortey at the far post to tie the match at two apiece.

After MU had five corner kicks over a two-minute span, a cross in the 77th minute by redshirt freshman left back Jack Alberts found the right foot of a sliding Nortey who beat his marker to the ball inside the six-yard box giving MU a 3-2 lead which it would not relinquish.

In the closing seconds of the match, Ohio State nearly tied the score off a corner, but a shot from 14 yards out sailed just over the cross bar.

MU dominated the stat sheet from start to finish. Marquette bested Ohio State in total shots (18-6), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (9-3).

The Golden Eagles conclude their preseason schedule against Wright State this Sunday, Aug. 24 at 1:30 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
