FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Marquette University junior forward Kelmend Islami scored two unanswered goals in the second half Thursday as the No. 12-ranked Golden Eagles men's soccer team came back to tie No. 1 Indiana 3-3 at IPFW's Hefner Fields.

The preseason match against the top-ranked Hoosiers, the defending national champion, was part of the Shindigz National Soccer Festival and marked the final exhibition contest for MU before the start the 2013 regular season next week.

The Golden Eagles found themselves chasing the game early after Indiana grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the fifth minute of play. Harrison Petts crossed it from the right side to the middle of the box where it was headed into the right side of the net by an unmarked A.J. Corrado.

Marquette evened the match at 1-1 in the 13th minute when redshirt sophomore Axel Sjoberg cleaned up off a MU free kick from just inside midfield sent into the box by senior Paul Dillon. The ball bounced once in the box after a deflection by an IU defender, and Sjoberg volleyed it past Hoosiers starting goalkeeper Michael Soderlund.

Indiana retook the lead at 2-1 in the 29th minute following a quick combination in the middle of the field that allowed Jacob Bushue an open look at goal. Lyon got a hand on Bushue's strike, but it wasn't enough to prevent the ball bouncing into the side netting.

Applying continued pressure to the MU backline, the Hoosiers were able to double their lead before halftime, 3-1. IU's Tommy Thompson and Dylan Mares broke through for a 2-on-1 opportunity in front of the MU goal in the 38th minute and Mares fed Thompson for the easy finish.

MU immediately set the tone on the attacking end in the second half, testing new Indiana keeper Colin Webb.

Islami brought the Golden Eagles back to within one, 3-2, with a beautiful strike in the 56th minute. Senior midfielder Bryan Ciesiulka played the ball to Islami at the top of the box where the South Milwaukee, Wis. native chested it to the floor and ripped it past Webb on his second touch from 20 yards out.

With four minutes remaining in regulation, Islami drew a tackle inside the box near the endline on the far side of the pitch, leading to a penalty, which Islami calmly placed into the upper 90 to equalize the match at 3-3.

No overtime was played.

Indiana dominated the shot column, 22-9, including a lopsided 17-3 margin in the first 45 minutes. Sjoberg had the lone yellow card of the match when he was cautioned for a tackle in the 80th minute.

Marquette now has a week to prepare for its 2013 regular-season opener, Friday, Aug. 30, at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Central time at Engelmann Field.
