Marquette Reclaims Milwaukee Cup With 3-2 Win Over UWM
Aug. 24, 2012
MILWAUKEE - MILWAUKEE -- A volley by sophomore Sebastian Jansson with one second remaining in regulation lifted the Marquette University men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the season opener from Valley Fields on Friday night.
With the victory, MU (1-0-0) reclaimed the Milwaukee Cup trophy, which had been in possession of the Panthers (0-1-0) since 2010.
Eric Pothast got a touch on the ball with five seconds left on the clock and directed it back toward the middle of the box where Jansson picked it out of clean air and his half-bicycle kick beat the UWM keeper with the crowd of 1,892 fans erupting as time expired.
It was Jansson's third career game winner.
Marquette had come back twice throughout the match, leveling the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick taken by junior Bryan Ciesiulka in the 61st minute after Pothast was tackled in the box on an MU corner kick.
UWM opened the scoring in the 51st minute on a goal by Cody Banks, who deposited it from top shelf from 10 yards out with his right foot after taking one touch in the box to shake his defender.
The Panthers took the lead again at 2-1 in the middle of the second half as Declan Rodriguez dribbled into space near the top of the box and sent a rocket into the right side of the net from 25 yards in the 70th minute.
MU didn't equalize until the 82nd minute when a misdirected clearance by the Panther's goalkeeper ended up at the feet of redshirt junior Adam Lysak. Lysak would beat the keeper one-on-one to make it 2-2.
Both teams had opportunities early on. Marquette secured six corner kicks within the first 16 minutes of play, the last corner kick from junior Paul Dillon resulting in a header by redshirt freshman Axel Sjoberg that hit the left post.
In the 30th minute, UWM's Zach Stevenson fired a shot from 22 yards out at the top of the box that hit the crossbar. Stevenson collected his own rebound and got off another shot that sailed high.
Milwaukee was credited with 16 of the 30 taken during the 90-minute battle, but only four of the Panther's shots were on target compared to eight shots on goal by the Golden Eagles.
Redshirt sophomore Charlie Lyon finished with two saves and his first collegiate victory between the posts.
