Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener at UIC, 2-1
Aug. 27, 2011
CHICAGO - Marquette University (0-1-0) opened the 2011 men's soccer season Saturday with a 2-1 loss to UIC (1-0-0) at Flames Field. UIC scored both goals within three minutes of each other in the second half and thwarted numerous MU scoring chances to hold on to the victory.
All three goals came in the second half of play. UIC's Ned Pavlovic scored first, unassisted, in the 58th minute. Pavlovic intercepted a pass then turned a half-chance into a 1-0 lead when he took a crack from 30-yards out in front of three Marquette stoppers, catching Golden Eagles goalkeeper David Check off his line.
UIC made it 2-0 in the 60th minute as Jesus Torres found Joe Radice on the left side of the box. Radice took three touches to get space between him and his marker and shot it across the goal and inside the far post.
Marquette, which had at least three balls cleared off the goal line by Flames defenders in the second period, finally broke through with just over two minutes remaining in full-time on a header by freshman Axel Sjoberg on a ball played into the box by junior midfielder Ryan Robb.
Sjoberg, one of four MU freshmen making their collegiate debut Saturday, had a similar opportunity on a corner kick moments before notching his first goal as a Golden Eagle that was also cleared off of the goal line. Marquette out-shot the Flames 13-12 during the contest and had 16 corner kicks compared to six taken by UIC.
UIC had an opportunity to take the lead earlier in the second half when the Flames were awarded a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. UIC converted on the play, but it was waived off because of encroachment by an advancing UIC player. However, MU caught a break as the referee did not allow the Flames to retake the shot as FIFA and NCAA rules state. The frenzy resulted in a fracas and an anxiety that seemed to linger the remainder of the match.
MU head coach Louis Bennett was without senior midfielder Calum Mallace and senior defender Michael Alfano who were sidelined for the season opener due to injury. Both players will be reevaluated prior to next weekend's games against Western Michigan (Sept. 2) and Western Illinois (Sept. 4).
