PORTLAND, Ore. - It was a dominating effort for the Marquette University men's soccer team, which flexed its muscles in a convincing 4-2 road victory over the Portland Pilots at Merlo Field, Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30.

The Golden Eagles (1-1-0) controlled possession and created numerous scoring chances early en route to a four-goal outburst to salvage a West Coast split. Senior Kelmend Islami, who missed all of the 2014 season, scored his first two goals of the year before the Pilots (0-2-0) could even start to get comfortable.

Islami put Marquette ahead in the 6th minute with a header to the left upper 90, that was started with a long throw-in by Jake Taylor that was flicked on by John Pothast. The South Milwaukee native struck again in the 14th minute on a well timed through ball by C. Nortey to make it 2-0.

Taylor later assisted Alex McBride on MU's third goal of the match in the 31st minute and the rout was on.

Portland got one back in the first half on Brandon Zambrano's tally, a rebound off a Matthew Coffey shot that was initially saved by MU's Luis Barraza. The freshman keeper made his second straight start and was credited with three saves and two goals allowed in just over 67 minutes of action. Junior Mac Wheeler made his first appearance of the season in relief and did not record a save.

Just 55 seconds into the second half, Nortey scored his first of the season as Jesper Larsson found him streaking through the box and the Accra, Ghana native slid it inside the right post to make it 4-1.

Hugo Rhoads, who tied Zambrano for the Portland lead with three shots, added his team's second goal in the 55th minute.

Desperately trying to get back into match, Portland was forced to make the game physical and did so successfully, but Marquette was up to the task and denied any sort of comeback attempt. It was another spirited effort by the backline as they were without the services of Danny Jarosz and Jack Alberts, who are each expected to return soon.

The Golden Eagles will now look ahead to the highly anticipated match up against UW-Milwaukee for the Milwaukee Cup, which is set for Thursday, Sept. 3, at Engelmann Stadium. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
