CHICAGO, Ill. - The Marquette men's soccer team (1-2) outshot Ill.-Chicago 16-10, but came up short in goal scoring chances, falling to the Flames (1-0), 3-0.

The Flames were paced by senior Pete Kelley who netted a career-best two goals. Robert Gallo set up both Kelly strikes with a pair of assists.

Kelly scored in the 19th minute and finalized the scoring in the 51st minute. His goals sandwiched a tally by Eric Cervantes in the 24th minute.

"We really let in three soft goals," said Marquette head coach Steve Adlard. "It's really a learning process for us right now. We're still learning the basics."

Marquette put eight of its 16 shots on goal, but UIC keeper Ross Cain made seven saves, in addition to a pair of crossbar strikes. Senior forward Derek Gutierrez led MU's offense with four shots. Marquette struggled after senior defender Andy Wagner and junior midfielder Danny Mullin left with injuries.

"In terms of moving the ball, we're not terrible," Adlard said. "When you lose leadership through injuries, it's something you just have to work through. Its frustrating right now. In the short term, it's difficult. But we are in a rebirth. We will be better off in the long term."

Marquette returns to action when it takes on Oakland on Sunday, Sept. 7 in Rochester, Mich. at 1 p.m. EDT.
