MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University dropped its men's soccer home opener Sunday, and third consecutive match, with a 2-1 loss to Wright State at Valley Fields.

"It's obviously very disappointing; the first 45 minutes was probably the worst 45 minutes we've had this season," said head coach Louis Bennett. "We couldn't connect on passes. There was no spring. There was no luster. As soon as we went down two goals, all of a sudden we pulled out our sword and started fencing. We can be better. We have to be better."

Marquette drops to 1-4-0 with the defeat, while Wright State, ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region, improves to 4-1-1 overall.

Freshman C. Nortey's bicycle kick goal at the 59:45 mark cut into the Raiders' 2-0 lead, but it didn't prove to be enough as Wright State held off Marquette's attack for the remainder of the match.

The Golden Eagles out shot Wight State, 18-11, and held a 11-3 corner kick advantage in the game.

Redshirt freshman Charlie Lyon, who made first career start in goal as a Golden Eagle, came out of the net in the 26th minute and mis-played a ball off his foot turning it over to Wright State's Justin Laird, who scored on the empty net for the first goal of the match.

In the 57th minute the Raiders notched another goal to extend the lead to 2-0 when Laird found teammate Bry Rockwell-Ashton with a through ball at the top of the box. Rockwell-Ashton lobbed a shot over Lyon's head from eight yards out, scoring the eventual game winner.

Sophomore Eric Pothast suffered a head injury in the second half and will be reevaluated this week. The Golden Eagles have also been without fellow defenseman Axel Sjoberg, who broke his right foot in the match against Western Illinois on Sept. 4.

"I think the players that we have can do the job," said Bennett. "We'll do our job to make sure they are better prepared, and then they'll have to step forward and they'll do the job."

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when they welcome Michigan State to Valley Fields for a 7:05 p.m. start.
