MILWAUKEE - A solid defensive effort combined with consistent goalkeeping and a timely offensive strike propelled Marquette (3-3) to a win over Evansville (2-2-1), 1-0, in men's college soccer.

Marquette scored the game's only goal when freshman Matt Blouin struck a ball past Evansville goalkeeper Troy Perkins from 15 yards away to Perkins' right. Perkins was unable to stop the blast from Blouin, who essentially found a loose ball deep in the offensive end. The goal is Blouin's second of the season.

Perkins was solid in goal for Evansville, making five stops. Marquette goalkeeper Adam Ubert was also impressive, stopping seven Evansville attacks for his second-straight shutout.

"It was a very gutsy performance all around," head coach Steve Adlard said. "Our boys worked extremely hard and tirelessly. We made some mistakes, but we fought hard to overcome them. Ubert made some key saves as well to help us out of some tough situations."

Evansville was the aggressor on offense, outshooting Marquette 14-9. The Purple Aces' best offensive chance came 30 seconds into the second half. Adam Schulz had a chance at an early goal for Evansville. His header from 10 yards looped over Ubert's head towards the open net. The ball hit the crossbar and was cleared by MU junior defender Danny Mullin.
