MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team was 55 seconds away from closing out a narrow non-conference victory until Northern Illinois found the equalizer in the 90th minute and then the game-winner in the second overtime to hand the Golden Eagles a disappointing 3-2 setback at Valley Fields, Friday, Sept. 18.
Marquette gained the advantage on David Selvaggi’s go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute and the back line did its part for the majority of the second half until NIU’s Luke Read registered the tying goal.
Read had been the hero in the Huskies’ previous two victories, scoring the lone goal in a pair of 1-0 shutouts last weekend, which earned him national weekly accolades. The sophomore defender proved valuable once again by sending the game to overtime with just 55 seconds remaining in regulation.
After a scoreless 10 minutes in the first overtime, NIU found the decisive tally on the golden boot of Taylor Cole, who placed an indefensible shot over the head of MU keeper Luis Barraza and into the right side netting in the 102nd minute.
It was Cole’s first tally of the season and earned the Huskies a much-needed road victory – one that was more than 2 years in the making. Entering tonight, NIU had to go all the way back to Nov. 2, 2012 to find the last time they had won a true road game – a 1-0 win over Buffalo.
NIU scored the first goal of the match in the 40th minute off the foot of Giovanni Garcia – his first of the year. Kelmend Islami then tallied his fourth of the year less than 4 minutes later to send the game into halftime tied 1-1.
Selvaggi’s go-ahead score came off a beautiful long cross from Jake Taylor, but the lead was short-lived.
Marquette led the way with 12 shots, including three on target, while NIU managed eight shots with four landing on target. Both sides earned seven corner kicks apiece and both keepers made one save each.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road for a four straight games away from Valley Fields, beginning with the BIG EAST Conference opener at St. John’s in Queens, N.Y. Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Central time and the match will be broadcasted on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
