MILWAUKEE - No. 14/10 Marquette University extended the nation's second-longest win streak with a 5-0 shutout over DePaul in the BIG EAST Conference men's soccer opener for both teams Saturday night at Valley Fields.

Five different players scored for the Golden Eagles, all in the first half, as MU recorded its ninth-consecutive regular-season victory. MU, which took its first step toward defending last year's BIG EAST division title Saturday, is now 8-0-0 (1-0-0 BIG EAST) to open the 2012 season, continuing to add to the team's best start in program history.

With the loss, the Blue Demons drop their second straight match and fall to 2-5-0 (0-1-0 BIG EAST) on the season.

The flood gates opened early for the Golden Eagles as senior forward Anthony Selvaggi found the back of the net 55 seconds into the match to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Selvaggi was sitting far post, where he was at the end of a cross sent by Sebastian Jansson, who beat his defender to the end line at the left side of the box.

Marquette went up 2-0 in the 17th minute on a header by newcomer John Pothast, who recorded his first collegiate goal off a corner-kick serve by junior Paul Dillon. It was the team-leading fourth assist of the season for the left back.

Redshirt junior Adam Lysak then capitalized on a diving header in the 23rd minute to make 3-0 after Selvaggi received the ball from sophomore Bryan Ciesiulka and chipped to the far post. MU's fourth goal came at the 33:00 mark on a similar cross by Lysak, who found Jansson near the left post.

Sophomore Kelmend Islami gave the Golden Eagles a 5-0 advantage, their largest lead of the season, moments later when Islami received a through ball from senior Andy Huftalin and chipped it over the DePaul goalkeeper.

The Golden Eagles, which have now won six of its last seven conference games at Valley Fields going back to last season, have out-scored their opponents by a margin of 16-2 in their last six matches, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Lyon recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season.

Marquette returns to non-conference action this Wednesday, Sept. 26, when the Golden Eagles host in-state rival Wisconsin at The Valley. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. Central time. The match will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports32 and can also be heard online through live streaming audio, courtesy of WMUR Marquette Radio.
