C. Nortey Scores Twice As MU Tops Syracuse, 3-2
Sept. 24, 2011
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Marquette University freshman C. Norteyscored two goals, including the game-winner in the 87th minute, as the Golden Eagles (3-4-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) men's soccer team came from behind twice to defeat Syracuse University (2-5-0, 0-1-0) in the BIG EAST Conference opener Saturday at SU Soccer Stadium.
It's the first time MU has rallied from at least one goal down in back-to-back matches to win consecutive road games in at least 11 years.
Eric Pothastassisted on MU's go-ahead goal on a header in the box that was cleaned up by Nortey, who notched his team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season Saturday and his first collegiate game-winner.
Syracuse took advantage on a miscue by MU goalkeeper David Checkto take a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Mark Brode's strike from 30 yards slipped through Check's hands and went over the goal line for the opening tally.
MU was able to equalize moments later after a hard foul on Pothast led to a free kick. From 45 yards out, senior midfielder Calum Mallacefound Nortey in the middle of the box, and the Ghanaian headed it into the left corner of the net to make it 1-1 in the 26th minute.
Both teams were physical and ambitious from the start, with hard tackles on both ends of the field, and each squad testing the respective goalkeepers early and often. Of the 19 shots in the opening stanza, nearly one-third of those were taken from 25-yards or out.
That tenacious pace continued into the second half of play. Check, who finished with a career-high 12 saves, made a brilliant stop on an SU shot from point-blank range in the 51st minute. However, the Orange regained the lead on the ensuing corner kick on a back-heel flick by Lars Muller.
Junior striker Chris Madsen checked in for Nortey in the 60th minute and immediately made his presence felt. Madsen leveled the score at 2-2 five minutes later by beating the SU goalkeeper far post off a through ball to the left wing from sophomore midfielder Bryan Ciesiulka.
There were a total of 45 shots combined in the match (Syracuse 25, Marquette 20).
The victory marks the second straight year that the Golden Eagles have won their conference opener, and MU has now won two in a row heading into Wednesday's non-conference tilt at in-state rival Wisconsin.
Kickoff against the Badgers is set for 7 p.m. Central time at McClimon Complex and can be heard on WMUR Marquette Radio.
