Seagrist's Goal Not Enough to Upend Villanova
MILWAUKEE – Despite controlling much of the match, as evidenced by a 20-7 shots advantage and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks, the Marquette University men’s soccer team fell victim to a pair of late-game headers by Villanova’s Jacob Anderson, including the match-winner in the 86th minute, as the Wildcats came away with the 2-1 win at Valley Fields on Saturday night.
Freshman left back Patrick Seagrist scored his first career goal in the 51st minute on a fantastic run and give-and-go with sophomore Toby Howell. Seagrist got a lot behind his right-footed blast and the Villanova goalkeeper, Will Steiner, was unable to make the save as it deflected off his body and into the back of the net to put MU on the board first.
The Wildcats got two goals late and handed Marquette (3-2-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) it’s first BIG EAST loss, while also ending MU’s six-match unbeaten streak. The Golden Eagles registered 10 shots in each half with seven landing on frame, while Villanova (4-3-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) totaled just seven shots total and four on frame.
“It was almost like they were lying in the weeds, waiting, working to try and stop us and then they had two similar crosses and finishes where we may have missed our marks. Credit to them, they did a great job of stifling us and keeping the ball out of the back of the net. This is a great league and our guys are getting anointed by fire.”
Both Wildcat goals came off crosses by Miguel Polley, whose accurate services each found the head of Anderson, who tallied his second and third scores of the season in the 62nd and 86th minutes, respectively.
Bennett decided to shift the formation to a 4-4-2 lineup on Saturday, away from the usual 4-3-3 formation of the previous seven contests. It paid huge dividends out of the gate in terms of was controlling possession and creating scoring chances in the first half, but the Golden Eagles were unable to break through before halftime.
“The first half was some of the most effective soccer we’ve played,” Bennett said. “We’re doing different things with the lineup in terms of formation, but we’re playing the same style and the same brand. It can be a lot of things, but I certainly think it’s pretty entertaining, but we need the wins. We’ll dust ourselves off and make sure that everyone knows what their responsibilities are and make sure we get right what we need to get right.”
The Wildcat win marked the second straight 2-1 result over the Golden Eagles after winning by the same score in Eastern Pennsylvania a season ago.
Marquette will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when it hits the road for the first time in BIG EAST play to take on Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Central time.
