Golden Eagles Battle to 1-1 Draw at Wisconsin
Sept. 28, 2011
MADISON, Wis. - The Marquette University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at the University of Wisconsin on Wednesday night at the McClimon Complex, highlighted by sophomore Eric Pothast's first goal of the season and two saves by Golden Eagles goalkeeper David Check in double overtime.
Senior midfielder Calum Mallace connected with Pothast on a free kick in the 36th minute. From 40 yards out, Mallace served the ball to the far post and Pothast headed it in to give MU a 1-0 lead, despite the Badgers having the run of play early in the contest.
MU played with the lead until the 81st minute when Wisconsin was able to capitalize on a set piece of its own. A foul on the far side of the field led to a Wisconsin free kick near the corner spot. Tomislav Zadro swung it into the front of the goal where AJ Cochran was able to head it in for the equalizer to make it 1-1.
Wisconsin went on to out-shoot the Golden Eagles 6-2 in extra time and 2-0 in the second overtime period, including a strike that deflected off the right post in the closing seconds. It was MU's fourth overtime match of the season and third in its last four matches.
There were seven yellow cards issued during play, including five cautions given to Marquette and a red card handed out to MU head coach Louis Bennett in the 64th minute. After the match, the referee clarified his ruling, saying Bennett's sending off was due to "dissent."
Marquette has now taken points off of all three Big Ten Conference opponents the team has played this year. Bennett's squad drew at home against Michigan State, 1-1, and won on the road at Michigan, 3-2, in double overtime.
Marquette returns to Valley Fields this Saturday, Oct. 1 to host Rutgers University in a cross-divisional BIG EAST Conference match up. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. Central time.
