MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Bryan Ciesiulka had a part in both of Marquette University's (4-4-2, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) goals Saturday night as the Golden Eagles men's soccer team claimed their conference home opener with a 2-0 win over Rutgers University (4-4-1, 1-1-0) at Valley Fields.

Ciesiulka netted the go-ahead score -- his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner -- in the 14th minute. Junior Anthony Selvaggi played a cross into the box from the right wing and Ciesiulka volleyed it past Rutgers goalkeeper Kevin McMullen to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage early on.

MU extended the lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute on a failed clearance when Ciesiulka played a cross into the box that was kicked into the goal by a Rutgers defender for an own goal.

Rutgers went on to out-shoot Marquette 8-3 in the second half, including a 7-1 margin on corner kicks in the final period, but Golden Eagles goalkeeper David Check finished with four saves en route to his first clean sheet of the season, and seventh shutout of his career.

Associate head coach Stan Anderson filled in for Louis Bennett tonight on the Blue & Gold bench. Bennett had to sit out tonight's contest due to a red card he received this past Wednesday in the Golden Eagles' 1-1 draw at Wisconsin.

With the win, MU climbs back to the .500 mark while improving its current unbeaten streak to five matches. The Golden Eagles are now undefeated in two conference matches and sit on top of the BIG EAST Blue Division with six points after a pair of victories over cross-divisional opponents, which includes a 3-2 victory at Syracuse.

Coach Bennett returns to the sidelines this Tuesday, Oct. 4 when MU hosts nationally ranked Northern Illinois University in the final non-conference game of the season for Marquette. Kick off against the No. 18/19 Huskies is set for 7:05 p.m. at Valley Fields.
