Men's Soccer Holds Off Memphis, 3-2

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's soccer team had things fall their way as it defeated Memphis, 3-2, in Conference USA men's soccer action. The Golden Eagles (5-5-1, 3-1-1 C-USA) had key saves from goalkeeper Adam Ubert and a timely strike in the second half from sophomore forward Blair Kohlmeyer to defeat Memphis (3-5-1, 0-3-1 C-USA). Kohlmeyer's strike came in the 79th minute, breaking a 2-2 tie. He blasted a shot from from seven yards after he collected the ball from a free kick scramble after Brian Schnell took the effort. Kohlmeyer nearly broke the deadlock seven minutes earlier when a 20-yard blast clanked the cross bar. "We fought hard. You have to give us credit for our fight," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It must have been a phenomenal game to watch. We were fortunate to get that final goal and get the win."
After Marquette took a two-goal first half lead, the Tigers got two scores from Dayton O'Brien. O'Brien got the Tigers within one goal on a penalty kick in the 61st minute. MU defender Nathan Sabich was charged with a handball in the box creating O'Brien's PK. He knotted the score three minutes later putting home a nine-yard header off a cross from John Reilly.
The Tigers nearly had an opportunity to not the score at three in the 84th minute. A shot by Daniel Dobson from four yards was stopped by MUD goalkeeper Adam Ubert. Omar Jarun's rebound shot from three yards was pounced on by Bert, who made six saves on the night. "(Memphis) created some great goal scoring opportunities," Adlard said. "They had those three-shot flurries and Ubert makes a great save, you feel it's your night." The Golden Eagles started the scoring off early. Junior forward Chris Lee score in the fifth minute after catching Memphis in an offside trap. After receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Bryan Dahlquist, senior midfielder Tony Walby looped the pass to Lee over the Memphis defense and Lee was left one-on-one with Tigers' keeper Clark Talley. Lee scored MU's second goal in the 35th minute on a break away. He relieved assists from Kohlmeyer and senior forward Derek Gutierrez. "I thought Memphis played a superb game," Adlard said. "It was fast and dynamic. We countered it with two great goals in the first half." The Golden Eagles play on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Valley Fields against Wright State at 7 p.m. |
