MU Drops Heartbreaker to NIU, 1-0, in Double Overtime
Oct. 4, 2011
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Northern Illinois (8-2-0) in double overtime Tuesday night at Valley Fields despite the Golden Eagles (4-5-2) holding a 17-12 shot margin. The loss snaps MU's five-game unbeaten streak.
Jayson LeSeth broke the scoreless tie with the golden goal in the 106th minute of play on a well-played chip from the left wing that snuck into the upper corner of the net, inside the far post. It was LeSeth's first goal of the season and just the third shot on goal in the match for NIU.
MU went on the attack early with a flurry of activity in front of the Huskies' goal two minutes into regulation highlighted by a John Mau header that was cleared off the goal line by a NIU defender.
Marquette held a 10-0 shot advantage in the first half of play, which also included a curling strike from Ryan Robb from 28 yards out that was stopped on a diving save by NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey who held on to preserve his sixth shutout of the season Tuesday.
The Huskies first shot of the match didn't come until the 48th minute, after the interval, and their first shot on goal came one minute from full time, resulting in a save by MU keeper David Check.
Marquette gets back into BIG EAST Conference play this weekend when the Golden Eagles travel to Providence, R.I., for their first Blue Division match up of the season Saturday, Oct. 8 (noon CT) against the Friars.
