Lee Scores Twice as Men's Soccer Downs Wright State, 2-1
Oct. 7, 2003
MILWAUKEE - Junior midfielder Chris Lee was the difference for the Marquette men's soccer team (6-5-1) as it downed Wright State (7-3), 2-1. Lee scored both goals in the MU win. Lee ran onto entry passes for both tallies. His first goal knotted the score at 1-1 in the 25th minute. Freshman midfielder Bryan Dahlquist chipped a from the middle of the field to the right side where Lee ran on. He took the pass and went square toward the goal and fired low to the near post for the equalizer. His second score came in the 57th minute and was the match winner. In similar fashion, senior midfielder Matt Darby passed a through ball on the ground to the racing Lee who cut over and attacked the net. Wright State keeper Jason Balach, who made five saves on the night, was unable to prevent the goal. "When it came to the equalizing goal, it was played with very good speed, good spacing and it was a good finish. It was a purists' goal," head coach Steve Adlard said. "The winning goal was equally good and very similar with the speed and finish." Lee was a threat for Marquette all night until leaving the match. He had seven of MU's 13 shots. His two goals give him a total of seven, matching a career season best set as a freshman. "Lee was a handful for them at full speed," Adlard added. "They couldn't stop him, which was a nice thing to have today."
Wright State stunned Marquette early, going on top on the first shot of the match. Paul-Anthony Perez scored 1:20 into the match. Troy Azuogu crosses a ball over the Marquette defense and Perez wound up behind the MU line. Perez's low attack from eight yards was out of the reach of MU keeper Adam Ubert, who made two stops on the night.
"Nobody contested, nobody supported. They got the kickoff and took it at us," Adlard said. "It was a beautiful goal on their part. It was a great start for them, but disappointing for us." The game was a back-and-forth affair with each side testing the other with long balls. Marquette was able to win most of the decisive passes in their end and thus held a 13-4 advantage in shots. The Golden Eagles have some time off before their next match. MU faces Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. |
