MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Marquette possessed the ball for much of the contest, fired 30 shots at the East Carolina net, and took 17 corner kicks, but could not find the net as East Carolina shutout the Golden Eagles, 1-0. Marquette falls to 5-4-1 overall and 2-3 in Conference USA play. East Carolina improves to 5-5 and 2-3 in C-USA play.

East Carolina scored the match's only goal 36 seconds after halftime. Brian Deutsch forced a turnover and then fired a hard shot from 15 yards into the left corner of the net.

Marquette had several opportunities to score. In the 16th minute, freshman Chris Lee (Lenexa, Kan.) made a diving header on which East Carolina keeper R.J. Marvinney made a save. Marquette also had several opportunities later in the match with 12 of its 17 corners coming in the second half. Marquette had 20 shots at Marvinney in the second half. The ECU netminder made 11 saves on the night to preserve the shutout.

"We had 44 and a half minutes to score the tying goal," head coach Steve Adlard said. "You still have to go back to your game plan and stick to your style of play. Near misses aren't good enough when you have so many of them.

Marquette next plays on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. against Memphis. That match is part of a double header with the women's team, which meets East Carolina at 11:30 a.m. at Valley Fields.
