MILWAUKEE - Marquette University (8-3-1, 4-0-0 BIG EAST) extended its lead atop the BIG EAST Conference men's soccer standings Saturday night with a 1-0 shutout over No. 7 Creighton at Valley Fields. MU striker C. Nortey tallied the lone goal of the match in the 23rd minute as the Bluejays (6-3-2, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) suffered their first loss in league play.

Senior left back Paul Dillon, who notched his team-leading sixth assist of the season and third in the last two matches, dribbled the ball up the left channel and served a perfect cross. Nortey made a run in front of the near post where was able to get a touch on it, slotting it past the Creighton goalkeeper from the top of the six-yard box.

Nortey's first-half strike marked his fourth game-winning goal in as many BIG EAST matches this season. In his redshirt sophomore season, he is the team's active career leader in goals (16) and points (36).

With 12 points, the Golden Eagles remain the only undefeated team in the league. Providence and Butler moved into a tie for second place Saturday with a total of nine points apiece, ahead of Georgetown and Creighton (7 points).

MU matched its season-best three-game winning streak with the win over Creighton, the No. 1 ranked team in the NSCAA Midwest Region. Earlier this week, the Golden Eagles defeated nationally ranked Butler, the top-ranked team in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, 3-2 in double-overtime on Nortey's golden goal.

Marquette goalkeeper Charlie Lyon made back-to-back saves in 35th minute to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard. He finished with four saves on the evening, facing a combined 15 shots from the opposition. It was Lyon's third clean sheet in BIG EAST action and the sixth shutout of the season, one behind league leader Tomas Gomez of Georgetown.

The Golden Eagles travel to Providence for their next BIG EAST match on Saturday, Oct. 19.
