Oct. 20, 2010
MILWAUKEE -- Providence's Giuseppe Guerriero scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to give the Friars a 1-0 victory over the Marquette University men's soccer team Wednesday night at Valley Fields. The loss was MU's first at home since Sept. 12, snapping the Golden Eagle's five-game unbeaten streak at Valley Fields.
Injuries were a factor in tonight's lineup for the Golden Eagles (5-5-4, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) against conference division opponent Providence (6-5-2, 1-4-1 BIG EAST). Seven players were sidelined for the match including defensive starters Matt Stummer and Eric Pothast. "But our actual back line played pretty well tonight," said MU head coach Louis Bennett. "I was happy about the way they held it together with some brand new faces; we managed to do a good job there."
Paul Monsen, Hector Navarro, Anthony Colaizzi, Michael Alfano and Paul Dillon kept the Friar's attack at bay through 108 minutes of play while sophomore goalkeeper David Check tallied six saves in the loss.
The decisive game-winning goal came in the closing minutes of the second overtime period when Providence's Marc Cintron found a cutting Giuseppe Guerriero with a through ball, Guerriero buried the game winner from 10 yards out to give the Friars their first BIG EAST conference win of the season.
Marquette had several chances late in regulation launching three shots on net. Bennett wanted to break through the Friar's defensive line in overtime by sending out two forward scoring threats, TeeJay East and Chris Madsen. Calum Mallace gave the Golden Eagles a couple more opportunities in the second period of overtime registering two shots, one of which was turned away by Friar goalkeeper Jhojan Obando in the 103rd minute.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road for two straight conference matches, traveling to Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1pm ET/12pm CT and capping the road trip by taking on West Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7pm ET/ 6pm CT.
