Second-Half Goal Sinks Marquette at Xavier, 1-0
Oct. 21, 2017
CINCINNATI – The Marquette University men’s soccer team allowed an early second-half goal and was unable to find the equalizer as host Xavier grabbed three BIG EAST points in a win at home Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles mustered several chances, but were denied the elusive goal they sought after. Meanwhile, an unfortunate defensive miscue, in an otherwise solid effort by the MU backline, allowed the Musketeers (8-4-2, 3-3-0 BIG EAST) to capitalize with the only goal of the match.
A headed ball by Brendan Skinner went up in the air and came down near the outside of the box. As the Golden Eagles were unable to clear it out, Xavier’s Josh Grant swooped in and regained possession, firing a shot with a clear lane that found the back of the net in the 49th minute.
Marquette acquired one golden chance as Brody Kraussel fired one from distance, but the XU keeper Colin Hanley retreated back to tip it over the bar.
Redshirt freshman keeper Noah Heim made several fantastic saves for Marquette, finishing with four stops on the night.
The Golden Eagles (2-9-2, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) are back in action to face Creighton on Wednesday at Valley Fields before playing host to Butler for Senior Night on Saturday. Kickoff for both contests are slated for 7:05 p.m. Central time and set to air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and FOX Sports GO.
