LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In a battle of first place teams in Conference USA, Marquette couldn't overcome a late goal from Louisville as the Cardinals claimed a key 1-0 win in Louisville. Louisville (10-5-1, 5-2-1 C-USA) takes over sole possession of first place at the moment with 16 points. Marquette (7-7-1, 4-2-1 C-USA) remains tied for second in the league standings with 13 points. Louisville scored in the 79th minute on a goal from Ian Quatrocchi, his second of the season. Marco Terminesi recorded the assist. The play began with a corner kick that Marquette cleared to the opposite corner. Terminesi entered on another cross that wasn't cleared effectively by Marquette. Quatrocchi finished of the play from eight yards out. "We should have done better clearing the ball," assistant coach Barry Bimbi said. "We bumped it on but didn't get it out. They were able to score off a small mistake on our part." The Golden Eagles battled valiantly in the second half, taking 10 shots in the final 45 minutes. Marquette had three shots in the final 11 minutes, the best effort coming with just seven seconds to play. Matt Darby's shot was saved by Brad Sokolowski, who made seven stops on the night. MU goalkeeper Adam Ubert had five saves in the match. Marquette had the majority of chances on net in the first half. MU peppered the Louisville net in the final two and a half minutes of the first half. Shots by Richie Harris, Matt Blouin and Blair Kohlmeyer all ended up stopped by Sokolowski. Kohlmeyer's shot was dangerous, but Sokolowski tipped it over the crossbar and out of harm.
"It was a case our our missed opportunities against their taking advantage of one mistake," Bimbi said. "They played a defensive style and tried to counter. We did very well with that and never felt back on our heels. They just got the one chance."
The Golden Eagles step out of conference in its next match. MU meets Wis.-Green Bay on Saturday, October 25 at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. |
