Oct. 22, 2016
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team exploded offensively with a 4-1 victory and upset over visiting Xavier on Alumni Day at Valley Fields on Saturday night. Freshman Luka Prpa provided a brace, while redshirt junior Daniel Szczepanek tallied a goal and an assist as MU collected its first BIG EAST win in 2016.
The Golden Eagles (4-5-4, 1-3-2 BIG EAST) struck early with Prpa converting a penalty in the 10th minute, followed by his second of the match and eighth of the season just 8 minutes later. Szczepanek made it 3-1 by halftime, while freshman Connor Alba added his fourth of the season with a score off a redirect in the 48th minute.
The Musketeers (7-5-3, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) entered the game in second place in the BIG EAST and were receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 poll. Despite totaling 21 shots and 12 corner kicks, Xavier was unable to find much success against MU goalie Luis Barraza.
The Santa Teresa, N.M. native registered a season-high nine saves in net, while the offense matched its season-high with four goals on just eight shots.
It was the fourth four-goal output of the season for the Golden Eagles and first since a 4-1 win over Northwestern back on Sept. 5. It was also the third multi-goal game for Prpa, who ran his team-high total to 22 points. The win was the first over Xavier since 2013 and broke a string of three-straight 1-0 decisions in the series.
Marquette will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it takes on Providence on the road. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. Central time.
