MILWAUKEE -- The No. 15 Marquette University men's soccer team (7-4-3, 1-2-3 BIG EAST) had their 10-match home unbeaten streak snapped as the Golden Eagles fell 1-0 to No. 16 Xavier (10-3-2, 4-0-2) Saturday night at Valley Fields.

The game-winner for Xavier came in the 38th minute from sophomore Jalen Brown and redshirt senior goalkeeper Eric Osswald made all three of his saves in the second half to hold off MU.

With the win, the Musketeers extend their unbeaten streak to nine matches and move into a first-place tie with Providence in the BIG EAST table. Meanwhile, Marquette suffered its first home loss since a 1-0 overtime setback to Georgetown on Oct. 26, 2013.

Xavier tallied the go-ahead just before halftime. Owen Steinwall played it to the top of the 18-yard box for teammate Jalen Brown who blasted it first time at Charlie Lyon. The shot went through the Marquette keeper's hands and spun into the corner of the net to give the Musketeers a lead they would not relinquish.

A few minutes later, MU almost found the equalizer. Louis Bennett II hit a well-struck ball from 22 yards out that curled into the bottom of the crossbar and bounced away from the goal.

Both offenses lagged from the opening kickoff as the first shot of the match did not come until the 26th minute, a Bennett II free kick that went wide right.

Coco Navarro's shot from just beyond the top of the 18-yard box early in the second half would have snuck in just below the crossbar, but was caught by Osswald.

Marquette had another opportunity to level the match later in the second half. David Selvaggi played a ball inside the 18-yard box to a charging Jack Alberts. The redshirt freshman's one-touch shot from the right corner of the six-yard box was knocked out of bounds by Osswald in the 77th minute to fend off the MU attack.

Xavier's Osswald recorded his seventh shutout of the season. This was Xavier's first-ever victory against the Golden Eagles.

MU hits the road next week for two BIG EAST matchups. Marquette will play its third match in a row against a ranked opponent when it takes on No. 2 Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska this Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Central time. After that is a contest at Seton Hall in New Jersey on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. CT.
