MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men’s soccer team ended No. 21 Butler’s 400-plus scoreless minutes streak, but was unable to overcome a pair of early second-half goals as the Bulldogs spoiled Senior Night at Valley Fields on Saturday with a 2-1 victory.

Connor Alba scored in the 72nd minute for his third score in four games, including his second-straight match, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Butler’s two goals in 41 seconds in the opening 2 minutes of the second half.

With Georgetown’s loss on Saturday, the win clinched the BIG EAST regular season crown for the Bulldogs (11-4-1, 7-1-0 BIG EAST) and a first-round by in the conference tournament, which begins Nov. 4.

The Golden Eagles (3-10-2, 3-4-1) went toe-to-toe with the top team in the league as well as anyone for 89 minutes. However, the unfortunate series of events that allowed Butler to score twice in succession was the difference in the outcome.

Joe Moulden notched his first goal of the season with a perfect header on a cross from Lewis Suddick in the 47th minute. Suddick assisted once more just 41 seconds later to leading scorer Brandon Guhl, who blasted one inside the near right post for his 10th goal of the season.

Marquette finally broke through with a response from Alba in the 72nd minute with his left-footed strike into the right upper 90, settling a failed Butler clearance on one of the Golden Eagles’ 13 corner kicks on the evening.

MU nearly had broken through sooner when senior Jason Davis had two opportunities on the doorstep that Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick impressively denied. Davis’ first attempt, intended for the right upper 90, ricocheted off the right post after Dick was able to get a hand on it.

The rebound came back to Davis, who tried to head it in the opposite side of the goal, but Dick made an incredible recovery, saving it with both hands before the ball had crossed the goal line. Dick finished the match with eight saves, while Marquette’s Noah Heim made three stops.

The Golden Eagles more than doubled the Bulldogs in shots (21-10) and corner (13-6), but was unable to find the equalizer.

With one regular season game remaining, Marquette (10 points) and Providence (5-7-4, 2-2-4 BIG EAST) currently sit in a tie for the sixth and final tournament spot and Creighton just one point clear in fifth place after its win.

The Golden Eagles take on last-place DePaul (4-11-2, 1-6-1 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 12 p.m. Central time, while Providence meets second-place St. John’s (8-6-2, 5-2-1 BIG EAST) and Creighton (9-5-2, 3-3-2 BIG EAST) battles third-place Georgetown.
