Golden Eagles Fall at No. 15 Butler, 2-1
Oct. 29, 2016
INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore Diego Núñez’s first goal provided an early advantage for the Marquette University men’s soccer team, but No. 15 Butler responded with a goal in each half en route to a 2-1 win at the Butler Bowl on Saturday night.
Núñez’s goal came in the sixth minute off a Butler miscue as he sent a rocket over the keeper’s outstretched hands and just below the crossbar. It was the second of his young career, however, was not enough for the Golden Eagles (4-7-4, 1-5-2 BIG EAST), who were officially eliminated from BIG EAST tournament contention following DePaul’s win over St. John’s. With the win, the Bulldogs (10-5-1, 5-3-0 BIG EAST) clinched a spot in the postseason tournament.
Both teams played with an aggressive mindset offensively, trading chances from the get-go. After the Golden Eagle goal, it didn’t take long for the highest-scoring team in the BIG EAST to create some chances of their own. In the 16th minute, Lewis Suddick connected on his ninth goal of the season to level the score at 1-1, capitalizing on a rebound through traffic in front of the net.
MU goalkeeper Luis Barraza made seven saves, including five in the first half, while his counterpart Eric Dick made four saves in the match.
The match-winner for the Bulldogs came off the head of the BIG EAST’s leading scorer, David Goldsmith, who tallied his 11th goal with a header off a cross to the far post by Michael Peay.
Marquette’s Luka Prpa, who recorded one shot on target, was kept off the scoreboard for the first time in four matches. Núñez led the way with three shots, including two on target.
The Golden Eagles now look ahead to Senior Night on Thursday, Nov. 3, when they play host to DePaul at Valley Fields. Seniors John Pothast and Mac Wheeler will be honored in a pre-game ceremony prior to the 7:05 p.m. Central time start.
16’ | BU | Lewis Suddick (Jared Timmer): After an initial save on Timmer’s shot in front of net, Suddick was able to find the rebound on the back post for an easy tap-in goal for his ninth score of the season that leveled the match at 1-1.
66’ | BU | David Goldsmith (Michael Peay, Alex Lehtinen): After a long ball was sent to the right side, Michael Peay sent a cross to the far left post and Goldsmith was there to head it home for his league-leading 11th goal of the season.
Butler: 1-Dick, 3-Moulden, 4-Sutton, 5-Timmer, 6-Kim, 7-Lehtinen, 8-Suddick, 9-Galliford, 13-Leonard, 20-Goldsmith, 22-Geldenhuys
