Marquette Soccer Falls to Butler on Senior Night
Oct. 31, 2015
MILWAUKEE – On senior night at Valley Fields, the Marquette University men’s soccer team was unable to answer two first-half goals by Butler in a 2-0 setback Saturday, Oct. 31. Junior David Goldsmith provided both tallies for the Bulldogs in the 23rd and 30th minutes.
The Golden Eagles (5-9-2, 1-6-1 BIG EAST) came out in the first half and produced a quality chance early on. With a free kick from the right wing, junior Louis Bennett II put a beautiful cross inside the 6-yard box that Nortey was able to get a head on, but sent it just over the crossbar.

The Bulldogs (9-4-3, 5-3-0 BIG EAST) would respond in the 23rd minute with the first of Goldsmith’s two scores. Butler’s second-leading scorer made his way down the middle of the pitch and, as he approached the 6-yard box, was given an accurate cross from Vincent Mitchell and he headed it in for the game’s first goal.
Just over 7 minutes later, Goldsmith again established position deep into Marquette’s end and finished a free kick service from Jeff Adkins with a header that ricocheted off the left post and in.
The loss officially eliminated Marquette from BIG EAST tournament contention.
“We’re all disappointed,” Marquette head coach Louis Bennett said of the loss dashing his team’s postseason tournament hopes. “I’m more disappointed with our effort in the first half. The one bright spot was we had the first clear-cut chance. But for the first 45 minutes, we looked stationary and we looked uncharacteristic of a Marquette team. By the time we kicked into gear in the second half, I think it was a little bit too much and a little bit too late.”
In the 58th minute, the Golden Eagles produced two quality scoring threats that reached inside the 18-yard box. Junior Jake Taylor put a right-footed blast that went just wide of the right post prior to Nortey earning a 1-on-1 with the keeper, who made a nice aggressive play to squander the opportunity for Marquette.
“At the time, you might have expected that to be the reverse with a youthful team losing their way in the second half, but we actually gained strength in the second half and kept fighting and getting after it, which is an admirable quality,” Bennett said.
Marquette goalkeeper Mac Wheeler received his first career start in net and made six saves in the loss while his counterpart, Eric Dick, stopped four shots for his ninth and sixth shutout of the season.
Both sides finished with 12 shots apiece with Butler having the 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also earned a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
Nortey, Bennett II and Kelmend Islami each registered three shots on the night for Marquette with Islami putting a team-high two shots on target.
Marquette will close out the regular season with the short trip down to Chicago to take on DePaul Thursday, Nov. 5. Game time is set for 1:05 p.m.
