Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie with East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Marquette and East Carolina played to a scoreless tie in men's soccer on Sunday, Nov. 3. The Pirates (6-9-2, 2-5-2 C-USA) outshot the Golden Eagles (8-7-1, 6-2-1 C-USA) 20-16, but both teams had opportunities that just wouldn't fall. Marquette had a number of chances. In the final minute of the second overtime, with ECU's goal keeper R.J. Marvinney pulled out of the goal, Marquette senior Eric Marshall took a shot that was blocked with a diving save by ECU defender Pat Cutler. In the last three minutes of regulation play East Carolina's Joe Ellington had two shots off crosses as did juniors Clyde Simms and Mike McClain. Marshall led MU with six shots,l while Brian Deutsch had five shots for East Carolina. In the 81st minute, ECU junior Brian Deutsch had a clean shot that looked like it was going to go into the bottom right of the net, but bounced off the goal post. Marquette had a similar result a few minutes later when Marshall took a shot in front of the net that hit off the crossbar. Defensively, Pirates keeper Marvinney had three saves on the day and MU keeper Adam Ubert had eight saves.
The Golden Eagles play their final conference match of the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at DePaul at 2 p.m. MU finishes the season on Saturday, Nov. 9 at home against Wisconsin at 1 p.m.
