Men's Soccer Gets Past Top-Seeded Louisville 2-1 in BIG EAST Quarterfinal
Nov. 3, 2012
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Marquette University defeated top-seeded Louisville 2-1 at Cardinal Park in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship. With the win, the Golden Eagles advance to the BIG EAST semifinals which begin Nov. 9, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
MU (16-2-1), the No. 4 seed in the Blue Division, scored twice in the first half and surrendered a late goal to the Cardinals (12-5-1) in the 85th minute, leading to some tense moments down the stretch. Louisville out-shot the Golden Eagles 19-9 while MU goalkeeper Charlie Lyon managed a career-high 10 saves.
Of note, it was Marquette's first win over the Cardinals since 2005 and first victory in Louisville since the 2001 season. MU also tied a single-season record for wins (16) in a season.
Marquette was awarded a free kick in the 35th minute to set up the opening score. Junior Paul Dillon's left-footed serve from 30 yards outside the right corner of the box was curled into the penalty area and found 6-foot-7 redshirt freshman Axel Sjoberg, who headed it in from 12 yards to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. It was Dillon's team-leading ninth assist of the season.
Junior Bryan Ciesiulka made it 2-0 right before the half on another set piece on the opposite side of the field from 35 yards out. His free kick bounced once inside the box, untouched, and skipped into the right corner of the net to double MU's advantage.
Lyon came up big for the Golden Eagles, especially late in the second half. Louisville set up for a free kick at the top of the box in the 70th minute that the MU keeper deflected over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, the Cardinals had a ball cleared off the line to keep them off the board.
Zach Foxhoven finally helped Louisville break through when he finished on a cross served in from the left side at the 84:49 mark to make it 2-1. UofL continued to pressure the MU defense, but couldn't find the equalizer to force extra time.
Friday's semifinal sets up a rematch against the Hoyas, who handed Marquette its first loss of the season, 2-1, back on Oct. 13 at Georgetown. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff time is to be determined.
