Men's Soccer Announces 2013 Spring Schedule
Jan. 25, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2013 spring exhibition season, which is highlighted by a pair of events in the form of once again hosting the Wisconsin D1 Spring Challenge and participating in the "Kick for a Cure" Soccer Exhibition Weekend in Omaha, Neb.
"We have 26 people in camp, and those 26 have got to solidify where they fit, so our schedule will do a good job of preparing us for that," said head coach Louis Bennett. "We may be coming off the best season ever statistically and academically, but that is just a starting point."
The Golden Eagles will be in action at Valley Fields on seven occasions this spring, including intra-squad Blue vs. Gold scrimmages on Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 24. Following the season-opening scrimmage, MU will host UW-Parkside and Loyola Chicago in a double-header on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
Marquette will take to the road and travel to the St. Louis-area to open the month of April. MU will play at SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m., before making the short drive to St. Louis to take on the Billikens later that day at 5 p.m.
MU will attempt to defend its Wisconsin D1 Spring Challenge title when the event returns to Valley Fields on Saturday, April 13.
All four NCAA Division I programs (Green Bay, Milwaukee, Marquette and Wisconsin) will square off in tournament-style action, with the winners of each opening round match meeting in the championship and the losers playing a consolation contest in the afternoon. The Golden Eagles will face Green Bay in the opening round, while Wisconsin battles Milwaukee on the other side of the bracket.
Last spring, the Golden Eagles earned quality wins over Milwaukee and Green Bay to take the top spot.
Marquette will participate in the 8th Annual "Kicks for a Cure" weekend in Omaha, Neb., on April 19-20. The event, hosted by Creighton University, raises awareness for women's cancer education and prevention.
The weekend will begin on Friday, April 19 with a youth soccer clinic and dinner program, followed by four exhibition matches on Saturday, April 20 at Creighton's Morrison Stadium. The Golden Eagles will play against the host-Blue Jays in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
The Kicks for a Cure program has raised nearly $1 million since its inception in 2006. All proceeds raised go directly to the quest of finding more effective ways to diagnose, treat and prevent cancer.
Marquette will conclude its spring campaign on Sunday, April 28 with a pair of matches. The Golden Eagles will host conference-foe DePaul at Valley Fields at 10 a.m., prior to making the trip across town to Engelmann Stadium to face Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a remarkable 16-4-1 fall season and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. MU spent most of the season ranked nationally in the top-10.
