James Routledge Added to Men's Soccer Roster
Feb. 7, 2012
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University head men's soccer coach Louis Bennett has announced that James Routledge, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, has been added to the squad and will begin play for the reigning BIG EAST Blue Division champions this fall.
Routledge, a 5-foot-8 central midfielder, enrolled at the start of the current semester, and he has been training with the Golden Eagles since mid-January.
The addition of Routledge comes in lieu of the men's soccer program's forthcoming announcement regarding Bennett's 2012 recruiting class, which is expected to be released perhaps as early as this week.
"He's what I would call a busy, productive midfield player who excels at getting the ball, possessing the ball and most importantly getting forward," Bennett said of the New Zealander. "Having him already on campus, because there is a slight adjustment period, means he can acclimate in a more reasonable time frame."
As captain of Auckland Grammar School in 2010, Routledge led the "1st XI" to the Auckland Secondary School league championship, the school's first title in seven years. He led the 2010 championship team in points with 17 goals and a team-high 16 assists under head coach Stu Robertson.
Routledge, who was born in the Caribbean on the island of Curaçao, participated last January for New Zealand's All Whites U.S. Tour, an international travel squad that competed against Major League Soccer youth academy teams and played exhibition matches against NCAA Division I opponents. He has also traveled to the United Kingdom and Ireland as part of the New Zealand Secondary School Team.
"The way he plays is very well-suited to our program. He's extremely ambitious; I don't think there's an obstacle that he sees that he can't get past," said Bennett. "Since he's played in a competitive environment and done well, we know that he can play against various shapes and sizes and in fast and furious settings."
Marquette will play a handful of exhibition matches this spring beginning in late March before the start of 2012 preseason training gets underway in August.
