Marquette University Men's Soccer Announces 2012 Recruiting Class
Feb. 10, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University head men's soccer coach Louis Bennett has announced the incoming 2012 recruiting class. Bennett, who'll be entering his seventh season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, has signed eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent or intent to enroll forms to attend Marquette University in the fall of 2012.
"Without a doubt, we had some really distinct needs with this class in regards with strengthening our depth as we had some seniors graduate from our program and move on," said head coach Louis Bennett, who led MU to its first BIG EAST Conference Blue Division championship in 2011. "I think we've really hit the nail with these guys and I couldn't be any happier with this year's recruiting class - I won't be surprised if some of these newcomers push for playing time and travel time this year."
Bennett announced earlier this week (click here to read press release) that New Zealander James Routledge enrolled at Marquette University in mid-January, when Routledge was added to the Golden Eagles' roster. The Auckland native has been training with MU for nearly a month and will be eligible for competition this fall.
Routledge will join seven other future Marquette student-athletes which include: forward Trey Dowling (Oconomowoc, Wis.); midfielders Alexander Behm (St. Charles, Ill.) and James Routledge; defenders Adam Hermsen (Appleton, Wis.), John Pothast (Lake Zurich, Ill.), and Patrick Schultz (Gurnee, Ill.); and goalkeepers Mac Wheeler (Waukesha, Wis.) and Brady Walsh (Grayslake, Ill.).

"We actually discovered Alex through our high school futsol program. I love taking a guy like this in every recruiting class -- he's like an unpolished diamond. He's got some things that would really help our program, not only with depth, but with quality. His coaches have spoke volumes about his dedication and ambition. He was one of the best technical players at our camp." - Coach Bennett

"Trey has been a multi-sport athlete who is well-rounded, but in the last couple of years has become more of a specialist and will help to address our issue of lack of size in the front five. He's a very dangerous player and is hard to knock off the ball. What's exciting about Trey is that his best soccer is ahead of him. He's a player and a person who can contribute alot to the program as a whole." - Coach Bennett

"When we first started recruiting Adam, the first thing we noticed was his athleticism and his tenaciousness. He's one of those quiet leaders. In addition, we viewed him as potentially one of the best players in Wisconsin. He will provide valuable size and address the need for quickness on the outside." - Coach Bennett

"We needed to bring a central defender as well as a guy that can attack. John is strong, ambitious and tough. He's very determined. We have a history with the Pothast family, obviously, and John comes from a very solid club program. He also gives us additional height and there's a physical aspect to his game that is needed at this level."
Patrick Schulz | 5-6 | D | Gurnee, Ill. | Warren Township | Sockers F.C. Academy
Three year starter for Jason Ahonen at Warren Township High School... Helped the Blue Devils capture regional, sectional and super-sectional titles in 2011... Named team captain his senior season... Mac Wheeler | 6-1 | GK | Waukesha, Wis. | Kettle Moraine | Elm Grove U-18

"Mac Wheeler is probably one of the best goalkeepers in the state. He's an extremely well-rounded young man, tenacious, brave; sometime unorthodox, but gets the job done. He comes from a good club and good coaches" - Coach Bennett
"I've had my eye on Mac Wheeler and his goalkeeping aura for quite a while, since his earlier days with Bob Spielman and the Elm Grove Soccer Club. He has a certain flair with the position. I would describe it as freakishly rangy. Mac also communicates very well with his back line, solving problems before they happen. With him being a great student I think it helps him put out fires early when he is on the pitch. - Coach Anderson

"Brady Walsh has been a late bloomer and kept knocking on the door. I immediately saw a personality and character that I knew would do well at Marquette. He is a well-rounded guy, as well as very ambitious on the field and in the classroom." Coach Bennett
"Brady is on the cusp of becoming a very good goalkeeper. He has been able to get by on his athleticism up until now...now he will put his coachability to the test and soak up some good stuff from his teammates and coaching staff which will help him become a better goalkeeper. He was highly recommended from many coaches that have been involved in his development, most notably Jim McNamara." - Coach Anderson
