Golden Eagles in the Pros: Two Sign New Deals in USL

MILWAUKEE – A pair of former Marquette Soccer alums are on the move, while two others are gearing up for the start of the 2017 MLS season and another is working hard to earn his Swedish club a spot back into the top tier.

After a brief stint with Anorthosis Famagusta FC of the Cypriot League, Louis Bennett II (’17) has signed a new contract with Swope Park Rangers of the USL and affiliate member to Sporting KC. The 21-year-old midfielder and Shorewood, Wisconsin, native is looking forward to joining his new club.

“I’m very excited to join a club and organization that upholds a wonderful professional identity,” Bennett II told sportingkc.com. “Furthermore, I’m ready to help win games for the club and its fans.”

Meanwhile, 2015 Marquette grad Charlie Lyon is also on the move, signing a new deal with Orange County SC, also of the USL, on Wednesday. Lyon was a fourth-round pick of the Seattle Sounders in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and spent two years with the club, culminating in a 2016 MLS Cup championship.

“Charlie is a strong young goalkeeper who has both league experience and vast potential. His character fits well with our organization and team,” head coach Logan Pause told OrangeCountySoccer.com.

Fellow MLS SuperDraft selections and Marquette grads, Axel Sjoberg (‘15) and Calum Mallace (’12), are winding down their MLS training camps and preparing for the start of the 2017 MLS season with their respective clubs. Sjoberg, who was the 14th overall pick in the 2015 SuperDraft, broke out in a big way in his second season with the Rapids as he finished 2016 as a nominee for the MLS Defender of the Year.

Mallace was the 20th overall selection by the Montreal Impact in 2012. Over the past three seasons, he has solidified himself as a midfield option for the Impact and is entering his sixth season with the club in 2017.

Matt Pyzdrowski (’10), who is in his second season with one of the biggest clubs in Sweden, is looking to guide Helsingborg IF back to the top tier following a tough relegation year last season, while C. Nortey has an assist in eight appearances during his first season with AB Copenhagen of the first division in Denmark.
